Meeting with H. E. Shri Vikram K. Doraiswami, Ambassador of India to China

A Meaningful Engagement with India’s New Ambassador in Beijing

It was an honour and a privilege to meet H. E. Shri Vikram K. Doraiswami, Ambassador of India to China, during his first visit to Guangzhou in South China. The meeting provided a valuable opportunity to engage with one of India’s senior diplomatic representatives and discuss matters of importance to the Indian community and the broader relationship between India and China.

The interaction was particularly meaningful as it brought together perspectives on trade, business, culture, community affairs and current developments affecting Indians living and working in the region.

Discussing Trade, Business and India-China Relations

During the meeting, we had the opportunity to discuss several areas connected with trade and business between India and China. The India-China relationship has significant economic and commercial dimensions, with businesses, entrepreneurs and professionals contributing to opportunities and connections between the two countries.

The discussion highlighted the importance of continued dialogue and stronger engagement between the business communities of both nations. Indian professionals and entrepreneurs based in China play an important role in building these connections, while also contributing to the wider understanding of India within the local community.

Such interactions with diplomatic representatives provide an important platform for sharing experiences from the ground and discussing opportunities, challenges and developments affecting the Indian community.

Cultural Events and the Indian Community

Another important part of our discussion focused on cultural activities and the Indian community in South China.

The Indian diaspora is diverse, comprising professionals, business owners, students, families and community organisations. Cultural events provide an opportunity for people to stay connected with their heritage while also strengthening relationships with the local community.

We discussed the importance of supporting cultural initiatives and community engagement that promote India’s rich heritage, traditions and values. These events also serve as a bridge between Indian and Chinese communities, encouraging greater cultural understanding and people-to-people connections.

Briefing the Ambassador About REDIO

I also had the privilege of briefing H. E. Shri Vikram K. Doraiswami about REDIO – Rescue Every Distressed Indian Overseas, a mission I am heading in Hong Kong and China.

REDIO is focused on supporting Indians who may find themselves in distress or facing difficult circumstances overseas. The mission aims to provide assistance, guidance and community support when individuals need help navigating challenging situations away from home.

For Indians living abroad, having access to a responsive community network can make a significant difference, particularly during emergencies or unexpected difficulties. I was grateful for the opportunity to share the objectives and work of REDIO with the Ambassador and discuss the importance of community-based support for Indians overseas.

Strengthening Community-Diplomatic Engagement

Meetings between Indian community representatives and diplomatic leadership are important because they create a direct channel for discussing issues faced by Indians living abroad.

The Indian community in Hong Kong and mainland China has its own unique experiences, opportunities and challenges. Open communication with diplomatic representatives can help ensure that these perspectives are understood and considered when discussing matters concerning the community.

The meeting with the Ambassador was therefore more than a formal introduction. It was an opportunity to exchange views, share community experiences and discuss how individuals and organisations can contribute towards stronger India-China relations.

A Memorable First Visit to Guangzhou

H. E. Shri Vikram K. Doraiswami’s first visit to Guangzhou was a particularly significant occasion for the local Indian community. His presence provided an opportunity for community members to interact with India’s diplomatic leadership and share their views on matters that affect them.

I feel honoured to have been part of this interaction and to have had the opportunity to represent the community perspective while introducing the work and mission of REDIO.

Looking Ahead

The meeting reinforced the importance of community engagement, cultural exchange, business cooperation and people-to-people connections in strengthening India’s presence and relationships overseas.

As Indians continue to build careers, businesses and communities across Hong Kong, China and other parts of the world, initiatives that encourage collaboration, communication and mutual support will remain increasingly important.

I am grateful to H. E. Shri Vikram K. Doraiswami for taking the time to engage with the Indian community during his visit to Guangzhou. I look forward to continuing to contribute towards community initiatives and supporting the mission of REDIO in Hong Kong and China.

It was truly an honour to meet our Ambassador and share perspectives on the issues, opportunities and aspirations of the Indian community overseas.

Jai Hind.
